Mirko Talhammer (Lucas Gregorowicz) is beside himself when two strangers show up at his posh insurance office to remind him where he really comes from: a provincial scrapyard, where careers are not what counts and other things are more important: scrapping things, the family, and every once in a while, a good old fist fight. Synopses:
In 1945, after three years in a concentration camp, the artist Susanne Wallner (Hildegard Knef) returns to a Berlin in ruins. Despite Susanne's unspeakable experiences, she is filled with a renewed desire for life.
When she goes back to her old apartment, she learns Dr. Hans Mertens (Ernst Wilhelm Borchert) has taken up residence there. He is a physician and a former officer in the German army, who is haunted by the memory of the execution of 121 Polish civilians, which he did nothing to prevent. Under Susanne's care, the broken man gathers new strength and courage. Then, by chance, Mertens meets his former captain and decides to take the law into his own hands.

Since 2011, German Films has cooperated with the German Federal Film Board (FFA) to present the nominees of their annual SHORT TIGER Award as part of the program, now called NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER.

February 1939: Switzerland closes its borders to Jewish refugees. Hundreds of people continue crossing the border without a valid visa. An investigation is launched by the Chief of the Swiss immigration authorities to look into the illegal border crossings. Police inspector Robert Frei, a young, ambitious official who believes in authority, is summoned to the canton of St. Gallen. There, he finds out that Grüninger is letting refugees in without a valid visa, and even forging documents, and bringing refugees
over the border illegally.
