The Clinton Street Theater is one of the oldest operating movie houses in the United States. Opening in 1915 as the Clinton, the theater became the 26th Avenue Theatre in 1945 and the Encore in 1969. In 1976 it reverted to its original name. Although the theater has undergone many changes over the years, it remains an intimate single screen venue with the capacity for 222 patrons.

Famous for its long-standing exhibition of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the theater is currently a magnet for independent / revival films.  In April of 2012, the Clinton Street Theater was purchased by Roger and Lani Jo Leigh.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014 Zeitgeist Northwest/ Portland German Film Festival screened their first film This Ain’t California, about the skate-boarding scene in the old East Germany of the 80ies, and about the ways how this scene shaped the anti-socialist mind-set that ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin wall. As of today we have screened over 60 movies in 6 years and we could have not done it without the support of the Clinton Street Theater and YOU, our audience!

In our Monthly Film Series, we will show a variety of GERMAN or GERMAN language films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On the 2nd Wednesday of each month, audiences will now have a chance to see these films on a regular basis at the CLINTON STREET THEATER. (Children movies will be playing on Sunday afternoons – please check our website.) All films are with English subtitles.

Past screenings included the SISSI movies with Romy Schneider, the West Coast premier of Caroline Link’s EXIT MARRAKESH, Films be renown directors like Fassbinder, von Trotta, Doris Dörrie and Dominik Graf, movies celebrating PRIDE MONTH in June of every year, children’s movies, DEFA and UFA classics as well as milestone celebrations like: 100 YEARS UFA, 70 YEARS DEFA , mountain climbing movies and motorbike travel around the world, as well as ECO movies and documentaries about film history and many many more.
