Our film in November will mark our 1 year anniversary of this monthly series!
To celebrate this event, we will have door prizes and lots of movie and music swag (not related to CERRO TORE) while supplies last.
Zeitgeist Northwest is showing CERRO TORRE – A SNOWBALL’S CHANCE IN HELL in collaboration with the German Program in the School of Language, Culture and Society at Oregon State University.
Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of breathtaking Patagonia, David Lama, climbing’s wunderkind, sets out to climb an unfathomable route on Cerro Torre, a mountain once said to be the most difficult in the world. Until this day, the question ’who first conquered Cerro Torre’ cannot be answered for sure. However one thing is certain: No one has ever climbed this Needle of Granite in free-climbing style, using existing bolts only for security. This is exactly what David and his partner Peter aim to do.
After being confronted with natural and logistical challenges unknown to David from his competing days, he comes to realize the true nature of his project and what it will take to reach the summit. “Cerro Torre” is a documentary about mountaineering, friendship and transformation, as David has to overcome many obstacles in order to become the alpinist he is today. It’s a coming of age story that also takes a close look at the state of rock climbing and alpinism, as well as their many philosophies and ethical approaches.
